Hot Topic

Most of us remember the nostalgic excitement of waking up on a snowy day and looking out the window; hoping for school to be cancelled.  Although we may remember those days fondly what we may not remember is making up those days during a spring or summer break.  For many school districts, inclement weather days pose a huge risk to student achievement. States are working hard to provide online course access and virtual school programs to make sure that students can access high quality instruction any time and any place.

Online Learning and Virtual Schools are increasingly becoming a popular choice for states and educators to reach students when a school closure is necessary. Teachers are able to prepare lessons ahead of time in order to be ready for student participation long before the first snowflake. Because so many classrooms are utilizing online learning platforms in their traditional classrooms anyways, students are comfortable using their devices at home to complete homework or have class discussions.

Understandably, online learning is becoming a competitive business with many districts gathering reports and data from companies before they decide on implementing their products. EdGate is poised and practiced in the third-party review arena which many states are now requiring to make sure the content being used by students is aligned with current standards.  If you want to make your company stand out and be ready for state specific deadlines, a third-party alignment evaluation is the way to get ahead in the game.

Recently, there has been a surge of interest in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Standards within the K-12 school system. Studies have shown that by incorporating SEL curriculum into classrooms, students overall academic performance increased by 11%, compared with students who did not participate in SEL curriculum https://casel.org/impact/. Research is also seeing a positive impact on life outcomes outside of school. In a national study published by the American Journal of Public Health, students who participated in Social Emotional Learning competencies had a significant decrease in criminal activity and substance abuse with an increase in socioeconomic status and employment by the time they were young adults. Currently all 50 U.S. states have preschool SEL curriculum in place. It is projected that by the end of this year 16 states will have adopted K-12 SEL curriculum and standards. EdGate Correlation Services can help align your educational content to SEL standards. We thoroughly maintain updated standards for all US and continuously add new SEL standards as they become available.

Greetings Everyone,

A powerful aspect of having a staff comprised of former educators is the fact that we can take on tasks that publishers are simply too overburdened to take on. Take the task of creating a learning progression, for example. While tangentially related to standards, creating a learning progression is an entirely separate beast. It sounds simple enough; basically sequencing content in the order that the student needs to learn that information. However, throw in a couple of curveballs like the fact that in some countries, students are taught specific knowledge in a different order than what is typically taught in the U.S. Or consider the fact that some skills can span multiple grades, so how do you sequence those skills? These are the puzzles that we are keenly familiar with. If your organization needs to see how standards-aligned content progresses vertically or needs to look for gaps in a content through a learning progression, EdGate can assist.

As always, EdGate is your source for staying current with new developments in education and the impact of educational standards.
